FREQUENTLY ASKED

Are bioethanol fires safe?

Bioethanol fires are designed for safe use when installed, fuelled and operated to the manufacturer's instructions. As with any open flame, correct clearances, approved fuel, careful refilling and supervision are essential.

Will it heat my room?

Yes. Bioethanol fires give real radiant and convective heat, though performance depends on the burner, the room and the installation. Check the heat output for the model you are considering on our Technical Specs page.

Does bioethanol smell?

Good-quality bioethanol burns cleanly and produces very little odour in normal use. Always use the fuel the manufacturer specifies and follow the ventilation and operating instructions.

Can I see one working before I buy?

Yes. The range is lit in our Takapuna showroom on Auckland’s North Shore, open seven days. Outside New Zealand, we can send photos and video of the fire you are looking at. Contact us to arrange either.

Do I need a chimney?

Not for bioethanol or electric. A bioethanol suspended fire needs no chimney or gas line, though every Naked Flame model still hangs on its own steel flue. Gas and wood versions do need a flue, fitted by a qualified installer to local rules. See fuel options.

Can I put it out before the fuel has burnt?

It depends on the burner. Many manual burners are extinguished with their supplied shut-off tool, and automatic burners use their own controls. Always follow the instructions for your fire.

How do I light it?

It depends on the model. Manual burners are lit as described in their instructions, usually with a long lighter or lighting rod, and automatic burners use their electronic controls. See the Arc Electric Lighter and Lighting Rod.

Is it easy to install?

A suspended fire hangs from a pole fixed to the ceiling structure, with a flat or pitched ceiling fitting. Bioethanol and electric versions need no chimney; every Naked Flame model still hangs on its own steel flue. Gas and wood versions vent through the roof and need a qualified installer. Follow the clearances in the manual, and use a suitably qualified installer if you are unsure.

How do I clean it?

Let the fire cool completely, then follow the manufacturer's care instructions for the finish, glass and burner.

Where do I buy more fuel?

In New Zealand, from us: 20L of bioethanol delivered to your door. Elsewhere, buy a bioethanol that meets your fire’s specification locally, and ask us if you are not sure.

How long will a burner run?

It depends on the burner capacity, flame setting and conditions. Each product's specification lists the manufacturer's expected burn time.

Are there any downsides?

Bioethanol gives you real flame without a chimney, but it is not right for every project. Heat output, fuel storage, running cost, clearances and ventilation all need weighing up. Every fire in our range also comes in gas, wood or electric, so talk to us if you would like help comparing them.
