Electric hanging fireplace NZ: how to choose and install the right model

An electric hanging fireplace in NZ starts from NZ$7,090 for the Naked Flame Sphere. It needs no chimney, flue to the roof or gas line, just a power point in the ceiling space with the lead running up inside the flue, and it still turns 360 degrees.

Why choose electric

  • No chimney or gas. The simplest suspended fire to add to an existing home or apartment.
  • No fuel to buy. No refilling and no open flame to manage.
  • Good for families and rentals. A fit anywhere an open flame is not an option.

Models and prices

Model Width Electric price
Sphere 700 mm NZ$7,090
Curve 90 900 mm NZ$8,090
Orbit 900 mm NZ$8,090
Silo 900 mm NZ$8,090
Curve 120 1,210 mm NZ$8,590

Prices are for black powdercoat or corten on a flat ceiling. Brushed or polished stainless costs more, and a pitched ceiling adds NZ$1,000.

How an electric hanging fire is installed

  1. Power. An electrician installs a power point in the ceiling space above the fire position.
  2. Structure. The bracket fixes into ceiling framing that must carry 350 kg.
  3. Flue. The 219 mm flue is cut to your ceiling height and carries the lead out of sight.
  4. Height. Keep the base of the fire at least 500 mm above the floor.

Common questions

Is an electric suspended fireplace a real flame?

No. It uses an electric flame insert. For a real flame with no chimney, choose bioethanol.

Does it need building consent?

It depends on the electrical and structural work for your project. Your council or building professional can confirm.
